Every weight loss story is extraordinary in its own right and if the journey starts through a casual Instagram browse and turns out successfully, it is above extraordinary. Such is the journey of Nitesh Sajnani, a 26-year old whose weight made him hate himself. His life changed after he came across a sports nutritionist on Instagram, who made him understand the science behind dieting. Here’s his weight loss story of 38 kilos in just 6 months!

The turning point: I was 110 kilos when I used to look at myself in the mirror and tell myself that I didn’t want to look like that. I did multiple diets, tortured myself, left all the junk and even then, I only lost 10-12 kilos!

It was in December 2017 that I found a sports nutritionist on Instagram. This changed my life. He was not like a usual dietician as he first understood my whole story, how I gained weight, what my lifestyle was and what went wrong with my diet. He then made me understand the science behind the working of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. He gave me a ketogenic diet (not the one we find on the internet, which is extremely dangerous) and gave me a proper understanding of everything I had to eat under this diet.

Besides, he gave me recipes of amazing dishes with high fat content! He even gave me a day-wise workout plan and gave me proper supplements so that I didn’t get any sort of weakness in my body. I started losing weight and all my clothes needed alteration.

From day one till now, I didn’t get any flu or fever, which is often touted as keto’s side effect.

Before starting this, I gave myself a target of lowering my weight to 72 kilos and within five months, I achieved it. I ate almost 300 grams of butter and desi ghee, chicken, eggs, veggies (limited quantity) in various styles every day. Insane, isn’t it? But it’s true.

The most dangerous thing in Indian diet is the oil. Our Indian diet is full of carbohydrates. With a proper diet every month, everyday follow-ups with my diet coach on my eating patterns and proper workout, I lost 38 kilos of the unhealthy me. My dietician is more like a brother than my mentor. He changed my life and I would love to thank him for this.

My breakfast: Usually 4-6 eggs made in different styles, along with 100 grams of butter and 100 grams of veggies (any)

My lunch: 200 grams of chicken/Eggs/Paneer along with 100 grams of butter and 100 grams of veggies

My dinner: Usually protein shake or the same meal as above

I indulge in (What you eat on your cheat days): I eat parathas made by my mother and lots of Chinese food.

This diet is according to my body weight and schedule and cannot be followed by everyone.

My workout:

Monday: Leg weight training
Tuesday: Cardiovascular training
Wednesday: Pulling day (back and biceps)
Thursday: Abs and cardiovascular training
Friday: Pushing day (chest workout)
Saturday: Pushing day 2 (shoulder training)

Low-calorie recipes I swear by: Keto is already a low calorie diet. 70 per cent of the calories come from good fats. 25 per cent come from proteins and the rest 5-10 per cent come from carbohydrates. Also, I eat high fats like butter chicken, egg curry, butter paneer, butter palak paneer, chilli chicken, etc.

Fitness secrets I unveiled: To stay fit, know your food well and of course, work out too to keep your body in good shape.

How do I stay motivated? By the tons of compliments I get on my weight loss. Honestly, they really make me happy and amp up my confidence a lot.

How do you ensure you don’t lose focus? I make sure I keep my worst pictures always with me. This way, whenever I feel like cheating, I look at them and decide against it. They really help me to stay focused!

What’s the most difficult part of being overweight? When you are overweight, your body is not in your control. I used to have a lot of back pain, breathing problems and even knee pain. I was ashamed of my looks and I never took photographs, thinking that people will make fun of me. In my opinion, if you call a fat guy cute, you are his worst enemy because in a way, you are encouraging that guy to stay like that always.

What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? Maintaining a lean and a muscular body till then.

What are the lifestyle changes you made? I don’t believe in the Indian diet. The conventional roti, chawal and dal are long gone for me! I have made a lot of changes in the things I eat. High fat, moderate protein and low carbs is my new lifestyle.

What was the lowest point for you? The lowest point was when I weighed over 100 kilos on the weighing scale. I was completely heartbroken and almost gave up on myself.

Lessons learned from weight loss: To not give yourself to your cravings as they say, “Every bite you take is either fighting disease or feeding it.”
