I pretty much always have everything I need to whip this easy smoothie recipe up. Here’s what you need to make a strawberry banana smoothie for weight gain:

That’s it! This smoothie is sweet from the frozen fruits and creamy from the milk, peanut butter, and bananas. It has just a hint of salt from the peanut butter. You don’t need ice since the fruit is frozen.

It’s so tasty, it might be hard to believe this is a healthy smoothie too. Good thing we don’t have to decide between good health and good taste!

I recommend using a large food processor or a high speed blender (such as a NutriBullet or a Vitamix) for smoothies.

Expert Tips from a Dietitian

This is a level 3 recipe (weight maintenance and active lifestyles). Fruits and low-fat dairy milk are low calorie foods I’d generally recommend for weight loss. This strawberry banana smoothie for weight gain has peanut butter added for higher calories and fat.

Keep in mind that this smoothie recipe is intended for a snack, not a complete meal. You can substitute the peanut butter for other nut and seed butters (almond butter, sunbutter, etc.). The calories per serving will not change much with this modification.

To make this smoothie even higher in calories, you can use whole milk. To make a lower-calorie smoothie, substitute skim milk for the 2%. Unsweetened soy milk is another way to cut calories (depending on the brand).

You could also experiment with using PB2 in place of the peanut butter. Peanut flour provides yummy peanut flavor to recipes for far fewer calories than peanut butter.

You may need to adjust the amount of peanut flour used in the recipe, however. It doesn’t tend to work as a 1:1 substitution for peanut butter.

We’re using whole fruits here, not fruit juice, to make the smoothie thick and add fiber. Though high fat foods and highly processed carbs can help promote quick weight gain, it’s still important to maintain a balanced diet. This means including sources of fiber and protein, like you’re getting in this healthy smoothie.

Rolled Oats (Old Fashioned Oats) 

Oats are considered a no-brainer due to their health benefits. Diets that include oats and whole grains are associated with heart health benefits and lower cholesterol. They are also rich in fiber (insoluble and soluble), phosphorus, thiamine, magnesium, and zinc. Oats are naturally gluten-free but often processed near other gluten-rich grains. 

Hemp seeds 

Hemp seeds have many health benefits and are considered a complete protein, meaning they contain all 9 amino acids. These superfood seeds are a great source of plant-based protein. Adding just 3 tablespoons of hemp seeds to your smoothie provides 9 grams of protein.

They’re a delicious, slightly nutty-tasting, gluten-free nutrient. Plus hemp seeds have tons of healthy fats (including Omega 6 and Omega 3) and contain high amounts of vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron, and zinc. In addition to the nutritional benefits of hemp hearts, some research suggests that hemp seeds may have positive health effects on brain health, heart health, reduced inflammation, and improved skin conditions. 

Apple 

Apples are one of my favorite fruits! They have a good amount of flavonoids and pectin, a fiber that breaks down in your gut. The fiber you get from the pectin and flavonoids can slow digestion so you feel fuller after eating. Banana

Bananas contain a moderate amount of fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants like Potassium, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Magnesium, Copper, and Manganese and are easily digestible food.

Did you know unripe bananas rank lower on the glycemic index than ripe and overripe bananas? The Glycemic index is a tool used to measure how quickly a food increases blood sugar levels. This is why overripe bananas are preferred used in homemade banana bread recipes.

Peanut Butter 

Peanut butter can be a great snack when eaten in moderation. It contains plants of healthy fats, as well as heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, but beware it’s incredibly easy to overeat this calorie-dense food. For optimal healthy eating habits opt for natural peanut butter with little to no added sugars. And measure your portions according to your dietary needs.  

Oat Milk

Oat milk has gained a lot of popularity recently, and for a good reason. It’s a creamy and delicious dairy-free, nut-free, lactose-free, gluten-free option. It has a few more carbs and fiber than almond milk and makes a great liquid to add to your weight gain smoothies!

HOW TO STORE

Apple cinnamon smoothies are best if you drink them soon after making them. The oats will cause your smoothie to thicken if stored too long. If your smoothies are thicker than you prefer, simply add more oat milk a half cup at a time or until your desired consistency is achieved. 

SMOOTHIES CAN HELP CHILDREN & TODDLERS GAIN WEIGHT

CAN I GIVE PROTEIN POWDER TO MY KIDS? 

In this article, the Cleveland Clinic says, “ Overall, children should get enough protein every day for basic needs and athletics if they eat two servings of lean protein, such as lean beef, pork, poultry, fish, Greek yogurt or meat alternatives. Anything additional from protein supplements likely exceeds their daily needs and is unnecessary.”

The article goes on to say that consuming too much protein, especially from protein powders, isn’t helpful and may put stress on their liver and kidneys and increase the risk for dehydration.
